Background

The National Rifle Association of America is an organized interest group promoting citizen's right to bear arms. The NRA advocates the protection of the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution as well as firearm safety, hunting, self-defense, and marksmanship. The NRA was formed on November 17, 1871 in Fairfax, Virginia. The headquarters of the NRA is still stationed in Fairfax today and is lead by President of the organization Ron Schmeits. It's political activity is based on the principle that gun ownership is a civil liberty protected by the Second Amendment. With its nearly 4 million members, the NRA is one of the largest political activity groups in the country, and there are more and more members joining the NRA each year.
