The NRA was founded on Nov 17, 1871 Gen. Ambrose Burnside was the NRA's first president. In 1872 with financial help the Creed Farm on Long Island, New York was bought with the intent to build a rifle range. Political opposition forced the NRA to find a new home in Sea Girt, New Jersey.

Rifle clubs were established. due to an overwhelming growth in participation a new range was constructed in Toledo, Ohio called Camp Perry. In 1975 recognizing the critical need for political defense of the Second Amendment. NRA formed the Institute for Legislative Action, or ILN.
